Best formulation for this sentence

Hi, i'm a student writing an academic article and I can't find a suitable wording for a sentence. The 'then current state of affairs' part doesn't sound right, although it could be gramatically correct. Any idea's?

Thereafter, and taking the then current state of affairs into account, more complicated functionalities are added, such as x and y.
