English is not my favorite subject and I thought that it was number 1 or 3, because it sounds like it makes the most sense. Then again you said not to just read words. Thanks for the tip and maybe that is my huge problem because I always try to see what makes the most sense when I am reading the questions.

1. So how is a statement about the price of corn just another way of saying that there's a drought in the Midwest?
If I tell you the price of corn (or soybeans), do you automatically know there is a drought somewhere?
I don't think so.

3. What would be examples of a drought? Does it make sense to say "Corn and soybeans are examples of a drought"?

Am I reading too much into this then CJ? I said number 1 also because of the fact that if the corn and soybeans are grown freshly from a vegetable garden, then couldn't it be a possibility that the prices would skyrocket since there was a drought in the Midwest.

Also, on number 3 I know you said no, but I thought that there would be a cause of the drought. Aren't some examples of droughts like a heat wave, soaring summer temperatures, dry weather, floods, natural disaster, too much water, too little water, and food shortage? Please let me know if I am on the right track or if these are examples of droughts.

There's nothing in the passage about vegetable gardens. You're adding things from your own imagination. That's not the way to approach these questions.

Consider: What is a restatement of the first sentence?
Statement: The Midwest is experiencing its worst drought in 15 years.
Restated: It has been 15 years since the Midwest has experienced a drought as bad as this one.
Obviously, the sentence about corn and soybeans is nothing like a restatement of the first sentence.

The problem is that information about corn and soybean prices is not information about heat waves, high temperatures, etc.
(By the way, floods are certainly not examples of droughts, for heaven's sake! How can too much water be an example of not enough water?)

Hello CJ! I wasn't trying to state that their was anything in the passage about there being a vegetable gardens. I was more along the lines trying to think about where the corn and soybeans come from whether it's grown fresh, imported, or exported and how the prices would affect the drought. Sorry, I looked up on the internet for examples of droughts and these were some that were listed right on the Internet. Since, we have eliminated numbers one (1) and three (3) as correct answers, then I would say number 4.

Sentence: The Midwest is experiencing its worst drought in 15 years. Corn and soybean prices are expected to be very high this year.

What does the second sentence do? I say number 4 that it analyzes the statement made in the first sentence. Isn't there an analysis of the statement stating where the Midwest is experiencing its worst drought in 15 years? Can someone please tell me if this is correct?
