Besides or despite?

_____his bookishness, curiously little is known about the world view of Gordon Brown, the first British Prime Minister said to be a real intellctual in decades.

A.Though B.As C. Besides D.Despite

The suggested answer is Despite. Can we use Besides? I can't make sense of the sentense.

Top answer

My first impression was to choose "besides," but I'm afraid it doesn't work. The fact that he is bookish is not really part of his world view. I believe the implication is that if a person is bookish, he is also articulate, and open about his opinions.

  • Or perhaps the implication is that we should be able to tell by the books he reads what his views are on the world.
  • But this doesn't seem to apply in his case.

I'm not sure I understand it either. "Though" and "As" are grammatically impossible. "Despite" implies that his bookishness might be expected to make his world view better known, which doesn't make sense to me. "Besides" is a slightly better fit, but implies that his bookishness is an aspect of his world view, which seems doubtful.
