Vocabulary

beseech vs entreat vs implore vs supplicate

Would anyone be kind enough to explain the difference between the four? Which is the strongest one? In what situations would you use them? Are there any collocation related to these words?

(I am posting this one again as, alas, it hasn't been answered)

These four words have been largely supplanted by "beg" in day-to-day English and take the same collocations and usage as that word. I beg someone infinitive clause or simply beg him. The dictionaries don't seem to realize that "beseech" went out of style with pantaloons.

  • I can't imagine using it except as a conscious archaism or facetiously.
  • "Entreat" is scholarly or literary.
