below/under

Could you tell me which preposition is right between 'below' and 'under' in the following sentence?

The sun set [ below / under] horizon in the west.

"below" feels more usual to me. It should be "below the horizon" though, and, to be fussy, I question whether the sun can actually "set below" the horizon, since setting is the process of it passing across the horizon. Something like "The sun sank below the horizon" feels more logical to me.
