Belongs OR belonging

#1 Pakistan's Interior Minister today asked for more time to end the more than two-week long siege of the capital Islamabad by some 2,000 protesters belonging to hard-line religious groups who have been demanding the resignation of the country's law minister.

Should't be it "belongs" instead of "belonging"? "belonging" is a noun, why we use noun here.

Thank you
