belonging to

Often said that "belong to" shouldn't be modified to "belonging to" because "belong" is a state verb, but doubt that it's completely true. Isn't this right to say "He is belonging to our society though he is a person from a very different society." instead of saying a thing like "He is trying to belong to us, and he will become one of us."??
