Believe a lie/ believe in a lie

Which would you say?

- He believes his own lies/in his own lies.

What's the difference please?

- I knew her before him/before I knew him.

I might say either one depending on what I meant. Without the preposition the person believes that his lies are true. With the preposition he believes that his lies will do him some good in the end.

I knew her before him to me sounds like "I knew her before I knew him". Would that be a correct interpretation?
