Believe

Hi,

Can anyone recall a pithy quotation along the lines of 'one can count on a man to believe what he has an interest in believing'? I am looking for the exact wording and its origin. Thank you.

Hi Julius Caesar is quoted as saying Fere libenter homines id quod volunt credunt which means: - For what a man would like to be true, that he more readily believes. Francis Bacon is credited with: - For what a man had rather were true he more readily believes. You can find both on Google Dave

HI

I can find very rare occurrences of 'A fool and his opinions are rarely parted'. I like that, but I think it is just something that one or two people have thought up. It's not a quotation or a common saying

The one that I vaguely recall is wordier and is of more recent provenance - I still can't recall the exact words. But the two that you suggested are very useful, too. Thank you so much.

Specifically I think the quotation I am trying to think up refers to people believing in what is advantageous for to believe in, rather than just what they want to be true.

Hi

There's good book out, fairly recently, on this subject, Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow, Daniel Khaneman. If you've read it, that may be what you are think of - just my guess

- Intuitive diagnosis is reliable when people have a lot of relevant feedback. But people are very often willing to make intuitive diagnoses even when they're very likely to be wrong.

Thanks again for the multiple attempts. I will post it here once I have rediscovered the quotation.
