Being with John .. when

Are these correct:

1) In his memoirs, he describes being with John in a French café when they encountered a barista looking very much like John' wife. John was overcome with emotion.

2) In his memoirs, he describes being with John in a French café years after John's wife's passing when they encountered a barista looking very much like John' wife. John was overcome with emotion.

Apart from the typo "John'" for "John's", (1) is OK. I find (2) acceptable but just faintly awkward. I have a personal dislike of the euphemism "passing".
