Can someone tell me how 'being' is used in this sentence: I couldn't sleep despite being tired. Can you also tell me why we would formulate the sentence this way instead of: I couldn't sleep despite I was tired.
Thank you for your help!

'Despite' is a preposition, which takes a noun, not a clause, as its complement. 'Being' is a gerund (a verb-like noun).
