Being Flanked by or Flanked by is correct?

I have learnt about what we all call Gerund. One of its uses is to place a verb as a subject of a sentence. But there is one sentence which puzzles me.

As i have learnt that :

Swimming can make me healthy. This I can understand. But my question is which one is correct of these two sentences in line with the use of grammar as a subject of a sentence, i.e.:

1. Being flanked by his faher on his left, and his mother on his right, Jony, addresses on his reason for not being able to come to school yesterday.

But in newspaper I read:

2. Flanked by his father on his left, and his mother on his right, Jony, addresses on his reason for not being able to come to school yesterday.

My question is why in the sentence number 2, it does't apply Gerund as I believe Flank should be made into Gerund form. Please for those who have knowledge on Gerund use inform me about this point. Thank you.

#1 and #2 are both acceptable; we normally do not use 'being' as a gerund (as an awkward passive gerund), however, but let the nonfinite clause stand as an adjectival, as in #2. I hope that you did not read that in a reputable newspaper, though, because the sentence has other errors.

Thank you for your kind and easy-to understand explanation. But, can you also tell me what other errors that you have noticed? and do revise please?

Flanked by his father on his left and his mother on his right, Jony announces/presents/offers his reason for not being able to come to school yesterday.
