Being faced or to be faced?

Hi all.

There is a multiple choice question that I find it very confusing. Honestly, I don't know how to solve these kinds of questions. I don't know if there are any smart strategies to solve them. Ok. Here is the question.

Global warming is one of the most critical issues ---- societies today.

A) being faced
B) facing
C) faced
D) to be faced
E) to have been faced

I think both option A and D are OK. What do you think? Thanks.

Top answer

A, C, D and E all have a passive meaning; the word 'by' would be needed before 'societies'.

B) facing

It's the only one that isn't passive, the only one that has -ing.

With the passive forms you need 'by'. ... issues ... faced by societies ....
But there is no by in the sentence given.

Thanks for the answers, but in this question active verb facing sounds odd to me. I am not a native speaker but "what does facing mean" in this sentence? Is it a relative clause reduction or something like that?
