"Being caught in the buff"

Hi teachers,

Would you explain what's "the buff" in this context? Does it have to do with "naked"?

- Quotes from Newsweek

Warren Buffett once said, "It's only when the tide goes out that you realize who has been swimming naked." Well, it's ebb tide for the global economy, and high-flying companies are being caught in the buff."

Thank you.

Yes, naked (= exposed) He is saying that the companies have been caught in their misdoings. Another expression that might have been used is "caught with their pants down".

Hi Philip,

Thank you for your answer.

Could I ask if "in the buff" have a negative meaning?

No, it's not negative. It just means "naked."

Some people sleep "in the buff."

It's a great metaphor that he used. I think it doesn't even mean mis-deeds or deliberate bad acts, just people who don't have protection or are not prepared for what can happen. They are "exposed" in both senses of the word.
