yong kim One example involved animals being studied in the 1970s. This is a reduced relative clause, or a relative clause equivalent, as it is called in the grammar terminology I grew up with. The complete sentence would be: One example involved animals which/that were studied in the 1970s.

  • yong kim One example involved animals being studied in the 1970s.
  • This is a reduced relative clause, or a relative clause equivalent, as it is called in the grammar terminology I grew up with.
  • The complete sentence would be: One example involved animals which/that were studied in the 1970s.
  • Being is used in your example because a passive clause has been reduced and to be is the passive auxiliary in English.
  • Was is of course incorrect because 'animals' is plural.
