Behind in the rent

I know the literal meaning of that sentence, but as a non-native in English, I think I'm not understanding properly.  Is "behind in the rent" when we live in an apartment/house and we don't have money to pay to the owner?
This is the sentence that I saw: "we're behind in the rent."

Hi. "To be behind the rent, get behind with the rent and lag behind the rent" means the same. You have not paid the rent timely.

Some say that the account is "in arrears".

Anonymouswe're behind in the rent.
= The date has already passed when we were supposed to pay the rent.

Sometimes, several such dates have passed. Then you're really behind! You can be behind two months (in the rent), behind three months (in the rent), etc.
