"behind counter"

Hi teachers,

"He works in a bookstore behind counter."

1. Could I know if it means this person is a cashier?

2. Does "counter" mean "the cashing machine"?

Thank you.

Regards,

TN

Dear Mister Micawber,

Would "check out your books" be a correct use in a bookstore, like paying for the books you are going to buy?

Thank you.
