Let's us say. I am writing an essay about a friend in past tense.

I like/liked the way he behaved.

Is it I liked the way he behaved since this is referring to the past?

Greetings, if your narrative is entirely in the past and you don't use any retrospectives from the present, it should be I liked the way he behaved, which can be taken to mean that you do not necessarily approve of your friend's actions now.
