Beginning a sentence with "so much so"?

"The snow pelted down at an incredible rate. So much so that we were stranded in the cabin for hours until the rescue team came."

Or...

"The snow pelted down at an incredible rate, so much so that we were stranded in the cabin for hours until the rescue team came."

Which would you say is better? Is it correct to start a sentence with "so much so" in either formal or informal writing?
