Beggars with S

Hi

This was like the stocks, with holes for offenders to place their heads and arms in, and

was used for offences such as blasphemy, card-cheating, fortune-telling, bestiality

and homosexual offences. The difference with the stocks was that members of the

public were encouraged to throw stones or any other projectiles at the criminal,

who would often die from head injuries as a result. For less “serious” crimes,

people could be punished by branding with a hot iron on the hand or the cheek.

Vagrants could be branded with V, beggars with S for slave, while people who

started fights could be branded with F as well as having their ears cut off.

--- I'm wondering why "S" for beggars??? There is "V" for vagrants and "F" for those who started fights, but "S" for beggars?? Emotion: smile

Hamlet says 'O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I!'
