Befuddled

1. Can I use the following articles in the spot indicated? a, the, and no article

They would need ____ proof of having completed the session.

2. I think the possessive "my" can be used for both versions of the word "language." If that is right, how would you know which one this sentence is referring to. I got this sentence from a post.

I too must apologize for my language.

How do you know which one the underlined part is referring to? written language or the English language?
