ok, so could you let me know why in a test, I was wrong when I answered "had known" instead of "did know "
Here is the sentence

Before Kyoto no one did know about global warming;
I answered "had known" because for me it was before Kyoto took place that no one had known about global warming . and not before Kyoto takes place no one did know about global warming

OK But I dont understand why we say
No one knew about global warming before Kyoto.(1) and
no one had heard about global warming before Kyoto (2)
Will it be possible to write
No one heard about global warming before Kyoto
For me these sentences (1,2)are very close so they should used the same tence past simple or past perfect

Thanks for answering

No, that's not what I was trying to say. I meant that if you say "No one heard about global warming before Kyoto" it would suggest that it was not something that peo

But it is the same as "No one had heard a bout global warming after Kyoto". That also means that after Kyoto many people talked about it. I don't catch the difference?!

had heard Some people spoke about global warning but there were very few., not enough to be heard
heard No one spoke before but plenty of after.

Is it the difference? And why

No one had heard about global warming before Kyoto = most people had not been told about global warming, and did not know about it, before Kyoto. It implies that Kyoto led to the news of global warming becoming well-known. This phrase refers to how many people knew about global warming.
