... before I felt New York,

Hello friends, I would like to known what does mean exactly this sentence I have readed in the Patricia Highsmith's book "the talented mr. ripley":
'I happened to meet your father just before I FELT New York, and he asked me to dinner at his house'
Maybe could be a mistake on the print, and so the right sentence would must be with "I LEFT New York"?
Thanks in advance, jo.

hi, i just noticed that as well. it should be a typo, and it is mind boggling that no one corrected it after the book was first published.
