Grammar

before dying herself

"One day he mentioned a poem about a starving Indian mother who gave her child her last morsel of food before dying herself."
The Brain That Changes Itself, Norman Doidge M.D

Please, is 'dying' as used above synonymous with 'killing"?

Thank you

No. If she killed herself, it would mean that she committed suicide; she ended her own life on purpose by means of some action that she intended should cause her own death. In this instance, she performed an action that she knew was likely to result in her own death, but it was not because she wanted to die, but because she wished to save her child.
