Before coming here

Hi. Is the use of past continuous correct in a sentence that has the phrase (dependent clause?) "before coming here to study further." Would you say a past tense or past perfect tense would be correct with what the time phrase "for a year"?

Let me tell you about me. I was attending a community college in XXX for a year, trying to learn to speak and write English better, before coming here to study further.
