befallen me?

hi teachers,

I am reading a blog and in this blog is 'befallen me'. What does this mean?

I remained inside my room for three months because of a prolonged depressive episode that had befallen me as a result of this ordeal.

Thank you. But why did the writer not use 'befallen onto me'? Why not use 'onto'..?

Befall is a transitive verb.

Because that would not be correct English. Every verb has its own little rules, and befall is not followed by onto.
