Vocabulary

Beeswax from the cap

0 Hi, 02br
00Does anybody have an idea what "cap" or "from the cap" (if a phrase) means in the following sentence? 02br
02br
00By way of derogation, in particular in the case of new installations or during the conversion period, bees wax not coming from such units (enterprises) may be authorised by the inspection authority or body in exceptional circumstances where organically produced beeswax is not available on the market and provided that it comes from the cap. 02br

0 Miche, 02br 02br 00I'm no expert, but from my basic knowledge of bees and honey I'd guess this paragraph is referring to beeswax coming from the cap of a honey cell. Bees use their wax to seal or cap honey cells, which creates ideal storage for honey. When bees create beeswax, the two main purposes of it's use are either in the hive as a building or repair material, or to cap a honey cell to store honey as mentioned previously.

  • Without knowing the full context of your paragraph it's difficult to be 100% sure this is what's meant as I don't know the application of the beeswax 'from the cap' and so why this would be required, but it's what I'd suggest is meant.

0 Thank you, Rich. That was my first guess, too, but it sounds very strange to me. Is the wax used to seal (cap) honey cells of higher quality or healthier? If so, that will explain things. 0-

00In answer to your question of quality, I too was wondering from your initial post whether beeswax from the cap was of a better quality (or as you suggest healthier) than other wax. I've spoken to a friend of mine who knows more about these things than me, and he suggests that the reason someone may stipulate beeswax must be 'from the cap' is that beeswax

0 Thank you Rich! At any rate it seems that it is the cap, the sealing of the cells, and nothing else. Whatever the reason might be. The paragraph is from an EU regulation, so anything is possible. 02br
