Been vs gone

Hello, I'm teaching conversational English and one of my students asked me the following. Why do we say I have not been to the cinema for ages instead of I have not gone to the cinema for ages?

If you use been, it means you went and came back.
If you use gone, it means you went but have not come back yet.

I hope this helps.
