You will rarely see an inappropriate mix of tenses like that in writing, but you may hear people say things like it. When we are speaking, ideas sometimes run together.

I would say

I was there once, about a year ago.
Shorter is usually better.

Your version is fine too though. The tenses are very slightly confused, as the previous respondent pointed out, but it's unlikely that anyone would actually notice if you said this.
