Been / Been so

Can i please ask for guidance concerning the following sentence:

"Without his efforts the place could have closed, and it could easily have been SO"

I would like to know :

A) Is the word EASILY correctly placed? - or should it be between HAVE and BEEN?

B) Is the word SO at the end necessary or optional?

Thank you, forum members
