Can I reply with:

I've been gone for 2 months. OR

I was gone for 2 months.

Both are fine and common, PJ. A native speaker would say simply "Two months."

Since you are still gone, you can only reply with the first one.

but to 'How long had you been gone?'

what if I'm no longer gone and just returned today and someone asks me, "How long have you been gone?" Would that be an incorrect question since I have already returned?
