Becomes(chess related)

Hi
GM Seirawan says:
"In diagram 100, the base of White's pawn chain becomes d4.If Black plays ...cxd4, after White recapture with cxd4 the d4-pawn will have no pawn defenders."

May I replace 'becomes' with 'is changing into'?What about 'is changing to'?
Thanks in advance

What about 'is changing to'? T he progressive tense is no good here, because what is being described is a complete event, not an event in progress. Just say .

It means that d4 was not the base of White's **** chain, but now d4 is the base of White's **** chain.

Do you know what a **** chain is, and what its base means?

I do, both as a chess trainer and as the translator of this book.

When pawns are lined up diagonally, they are called **** chains.

The base of the chain is simply the **** that is in the lowest rank of the chain and has no **** defender.
