become friends?

My textbook says that you have to have plural subjects to use the phrase 'become friends' as shown in the following example.

Example) We became friends easily.

But is it true? I've heard people say, "I'll never become friends with him."

How do you figure that? According to the OP, the textbook says the subject has to be plural, and I is not plural.
