So, we have to make sure it isn't suffocating? It? "it" can't refer to a possible drowning victim. No.

So how did you place? Fine.

The word 'suffocate' is not normally used in connection with death by drowning.

So we have to make sure it isn't choking?

I thought it could be used as a person. So what if you can't identify it as being a he or a she?

You have to use a neutral word like "the victim". Be sure the victim isn't suffocating.

I'm not so reluctant to use the word "suffocating" if the victim has already been pulled out of the water.
