My original sentence with "but", the comma was before "but" not "I'm sorry". In your first reply you changed the position of the comma and put after "I'm sorry" so that "because" could be used. For "but", you you didn't change the position of the comma. I think if I put the comma after "I'm sorry", "but" isn't used or is wrong as follows?
I'm sorry, I couldn't write back yesterday but we were out all day.
Am I right?
