because of how she felt ill (?)

Hello!

....................

Claire has been a vegetarian for years. She stopped eating meat because of how she felt ill. As she saw her doctor, she told her doctor that she always felt tired. Her doctor found that her blood choleserol was high. Therefore, her doctor suggested that she cut down on meat, especially red meat. Claire decided to "go all the way".

......................................

(1) because of how she felt ill -----when I read the sentence, I thougt, it sounds strange. Isn't it?

(2) what is the meaning of "go all the way"? ----- my guess: keep or follow the doctor's word completely.

Help me please, thank you!!
