because of his criminal act/his crime

The kidnapper was sent to prison because of his criminal act.

Could I interpret "his criminal act" as "his crime/criminal behavior?" Thanks.

You could use 'crime', but 'criminal behaviour', while reprehensible, is not always punishable.
