In English, you always need to fill the subject position. Unlike other languages, you cannot say "is fun"; so, you say IT (the formal subject) is fun. That's also why you cannot say "are 50 states in the US." So native speakers start the sentence with "THERE." (This "there" is very different from the same word in "Please sit there.")
