Are these sentences OK ?

1. We were late because it rained.

2. We were late because of the rain.

3. We were late because of raining.

I think all three are grammatically correct and interchangeable, though I'd use No.2, or "We were late because of the bad weather. "

I'm a non-native English speaker, whose comment might be wrong.

number 2 and 3 are ok.

1 I want to add had... We were late because it had rained.

My reasoning is that both were past events, and the rain occurred earlier than our arrival. However, if the rain continued even after our arrival than I am not sure if my answer applies.
