Because

1. I suppose anyone would prefer a command line over GUI because it is handy.

2. I suppose anyone would prefer a command line over GUI is because it is handy. (Is this sentence incorrect? Or it is just repetitive?)

Thanks.

What's a command line, and what's a GUI?

Hi Mike,

I think "The reason.....is because.." structure is wrong ,and we shouldn't combine "reason is" and "because" in a same sentence. Please let me know if I am wrong here.

Pieanne,

A command line is a line you type to get the computer to do what you command. It's not often we use command lines anymore, because it's all done with a mouse nowadays. However, in a way, when you sign in to English Forums, you type your logon id and password into command lines. (Strictly speaking, they aren't commands, but the idea is similar.)

"The reason is that ..." is definitely preferred over "The reason is because ...".

You're right, it's not correct... There's been a discussion (+ explanations) about it, but I can't seem to be able to find the thread, sorry. Maybe someone else will. The point was that "because" means "for the reason that ...", so you can't say "the reason is for the reason that ..."

I'm sure someone will be able to explain this much better than I have...
