Became/was established

Once the custom of coloring eggs became established in the West, superstitions arose. People believed if they kept eggs that had been laid on Good Friday for 100 years, the yolks would turn to diamonds.

I think "became established" in the above is very similar to "was established," but I may be wrong. Correct my if I am wrong. Thanks.

i think "became established" means the custom was widely accepted whereas "was established" means the custom was formed.
