Became attached

A baby girl has died after her mother’s powerful pain relief patch apparently became attached to the child’s skin as the pair slept in the same bed.

I read the above at The Guardian.

Please explain the use and meaning of "became" in "became attached..." if we remove it, would the sentence be still grammatically correct and without any loss of meaning?
