beautifully sculptured formations

Visitors look in amazement at the beauty in immense, underground chambers like the 25-story-high Big Room, which is one-third of a mile wide and nearly 4,000 feet long. Hanging stalactites, which vary from thin needles to huge chandeliers, fill the caverns, along with many beautifully sculptured formations.

Hi,

How should I interpret the part in bold? Thanks.

Shocking as it may seem, I think this is just bad English. It should be "sculpted formations," meaning that "nature" has created "sculptures" out of the rock. And I assume they are talking here about what I seem to recall are called stalagmites, that is, the ones that stick up from the floor, rather than hang down from the roof.

  • Shudder.
  • I hate even reading about caves.
