Beaten up badly

Are these both correct:

1-When I went in the room, Harry and his bodyguards had left. John was all alone, lying on the floor. He was badly beaten up.

2-When I went in the room, Harry and his bodyguards had left. John was all alone, lying on the floor. He was beaten up badly.

In both cases the underlined sentence is supposed to mean: "He was in a badly beaten up state". He had been badly beaten up.

Gratefully,
Navi.
