Be = visit/go ?

Is it correct to say I was to the cinema meaning I went to the cinema ?

no it doesn't
go to the museum, enter the museum and look at the paintings/artifacts ect- is visiting the museum
but when you 'visit' there is an idea of movement- to the place, possibly around the place (in any case, there is something to see)

when you go to the cinema- you are consequently at the cinema (not 'to'- you cannot be 'to' somewhere- that doesn't exist)
