BE TRICK?

Hi everybody, my question is the following: This is the sentence:
- What ____ trick the teacher into letting them out early.
a) the children did
b) did the children do
c) did the children
d) the children did was

I chose the A- phrase but according to other mates, D is the correct. I've found out a lot whether the verb BE TRICK exists or not, but nothing appeared because it would be BE TRICKED. Anyways, which one is the correct for you? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Fivejedjon but TRICK should be with "to" as infinitive or is it not necessarily? What they did was TO TRICK the teacher. Thanks again.
