"be + to + verb"

Hi, guys,
I am always confused with the form "be + to + verb".
I know it means an action in the future. I can't understand very clear as to how to compare with other forms like "I will do" or "i am going to do"
Could you please explain a little?
thanks,
Gustav.

Do you mean things like "I am to go to my grandmother's house" or "He is to let you know as soon as he arrives"? Those express an obligation.
