Be tarred and feathered

Hi, this is about the rock band Metallica who launch their own version of interactive computer game Guitar Hero. The drummer Lars Ulrich said the next words: There's a few songs that you would probably be tarred and feathered if you didn't play and weren't in the game - the so called hits.

Does that mean that it's "punishment" to some of Metallica hits if they are not played anymore and Guitar Hero idea is a good solution? Thank you.

Oh, I see, that you ( the band) would be criticized by fans if the hits are not included in the game. Thank you, Nona.
