Be spared

The bacts of the handkerchief tree are uneven and about the size of a human hand. They stir in the slightest breeze, resembling the small, white cambric handkerchiefs used by our grandmothers when distressed. These days this tree could have been called the Klleenex tree, a name we have blessedly been spared.

The last part is rather confusing does the sentence mean this tree probably was called Kleenex tree if Kleenex was not invented?

Thanks in advance

It does not say that much. I presume this is a fantasy. For some reason, the trees have not been called 'Kleenex trees', but no further reason is given, and the time frame is unclear.
