Vocabulary

be scared out of someone's wits

I was reading a book and I saw this:
"We have to joke about it because the alternative is to be scared out of your wits"
Now what does "be scared out of..." mean?
Thank you and please bring more examples.

Scared out of your wits is a fixed expression - I can't think of any other examples but this is a similar one:

You scared the living daylights out of me

Which means you scared me so much it nearly killed me.
